The Township Right-of-Way: What You Need to Know
The Right-of-Way (ROW) is the area between the sidewalk and street, as shown in the image below. Don’t have a sidewalk? The area between utility poles and the street is the ROW. Medians which separates incoming traffic from traffic going in the same direction is also the ROW.
There are a few items that are permitted to be in the ROW:
- Trash and Recycling bins for collection
- Yard/garage sale signs
- Public signs
- Private drive signs
- Tourist oriented directional signs
- Government/regulatory signs
- Brush and Leaves for collection
As a Courtesy reminder, signs are allowed in the Township, but are prohibited within the public right-of-way (ROW). Be sure that signs do not interfere with pedestrian traffic, curb ramps, or access to buildings, driveways, fire escapes, and parking spaces. If you are wanting to place signs on private property you must have the property owner’s permission. As a courtesy removed signs in the ROW will be held for 15 days before disposal.
